Earthquake rocks South Asia; no IMB personnel harmed

RICHMOND, Va. (BP)–Government officials for Pakistan and India fear a 7.6-magnitude earthquake near their common border may have killed more than 2,000 people in their nations, combined. No International Mission Board personnel were harmed by the event, said Gordon Fort, vice president for IMB overseas operations.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported on its Web site the quake hit at 8:50 a.m. local time, centered about 65 miles northeast of Islamabad.

The IMB reported that its field leaders are assessing the situation and will be coordinating possible responses with the board’s World Hunger and Relief Ministries team.
