    Gaines, pastor of Memphis-area Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn., specifically addresses the controversy involving past statements by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson on women, divorce and domestic violence.     NASHVILLE (BP) -- God protects Christians facing contemporary turmoil and troubles just as He protected the apostle Paul in the first century, Southern Baptist Convention President Steve Gaines said in his address to the SBC Executive Committee Feb. 19 in Nashville.

    Just months ago in November 2017, a gunman slaughtered 26 people attending worship service at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, on the heels of an October massacre that killed 58 concertgoers and injured 500 more at an outdoor venue in Las Vegas. Most recently, a teenage student who had been expelled from a Florida high school returned, killed 17 students and teachers, and wounded 14 others, although Gaines didn't mention any specific tragedies.     GALVESTON, Texas (BP) -- The next president of the International Mission Board needs to be someone who is in love with and in tune with Jesus and "has a love for the world," said Steve Gaines, president of the Southern Baptist Convention.

    Gaines, pastor of the Memphis-area Bellevue Baptist Church in Tennessee, addressed editors of Baptist state publications during their Feb. 12-15 annual meeting in Galveston, Texas.

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Prayer and evangelism will enable the Southern Baptist Convention to abide and continue its work in an increasingly eclectic society, SBC President Steve Gaines told the Executive Committee during its 2017 fall meeting in Nashville.

    SBC leaders and laity must see and love the lost so much that it creates a burden that the lost be saved, Gaines said in his address Sept. 18 at the SBC Building. He exhorted the Executive Committee, other Southern Baptist leaders and SBC employees gathered before him, to understand and love the disadvantaged, and to show them the love of Christ. Read More

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- Southern Baptist Convention President Steve Gaines is among about a dozen Southern Baptist signatories of a letter requesting that a Memphis statue of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest be moved from a public park "to a more historically appropriate site."

    In all, 169 clergy members representing 95 congregations and other institutions signed a Sept. 13 letter to the Tennessee Historical Commission in support of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland's request to move the statue. Read More

    PHOENIX (BP) -- With messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Phoenix pledging to pray for matters ranging from evangelism to racial reconciliation, SBC President Steve Gaines has called Southern Baptists to intercede "more fervently and frequently than ever before."

    Gathered around the theme "Pray! For such a time as this," messengers to the June 13-14 annual meeting urged prayer or committed to ask God for specific requests in at least five separate resolutions.
