Messengers make 20 motions, debate SWBTS trustee actionDALLAS (BP) -- Messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention proposed 20 motions during two 15-minute scheduled segments of the 2018 annual meeting in Dallas June 12.
Messengers debated then defeated June 13 a motion by Tom Hatley of Immanuel Baptist Church in Rogers, Ark., that messengers dismiss Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's trustee Executive Committee. Patterson denies mishandling 'reported abuse'DALLAS (BP) -- In a letter to the "Southern Baptist Family," Paige Patterson has defended himself against "accusations that I ever knowingly ignored or failed to follow appropriate protocols in cases of reported abuse of women, students, or staff at any institution where I have served."
Patterson's letter, released to media June 8, also conveyed to Southern Baptists his decision -- announced minutes earlier in a letter to Southern Baptist Convention President Steve Gaines -- not to preach the convention sermon June 13 in Dallas. Patterson, former president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, added, "In a few days, for the first time in 66 years I will not attend the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention." Patterson: 'I will not preach the convention sermon'DALLAS (BP) -- Paige Patterson has withdrawn from preaching the convention sermon next week at the Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Dallas. As a result of that decision, Austin, Texas, pastor Kie Bowman will deliver the meeting's keynote message.
Patterson announced his decision in a June 8 email to SBC President Steve Gaines and said he also is withdrawing as chairman of the evangelism task force appointed by Gaines a year ago in response to a vote of the convention in Phoenix. Read More

FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- An attorney for terminated Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President Paige Patterson issued a media release late Monday afternoon (June 4) defending Patterson against alleged "wide-spread misrepresentation and misinformation."
Hours later, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary issued a statement responding to the attorney's claims about documents from Patterson's tenure as Southeastern's president from 1992-2003. Also in response to statements in the release, current Southeastern President Danny Akin told Baptist Press institutional records indicate former student Megan Lively reported to seminary officials in 2003 that "a nonconsensual sexual act had been performed against her person."
Patterson has drawn fire for, among other issues, his handling of Lively's report. Read More
SWBTS trustee chairman: Decision to fire Patterson 'clear'FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- In response to "a number of follow-up questions," Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Trustee Chairman Kevin Ueckert released a statement Friday (June 1), two days after announcing Paige Patterson's termination by the executive committee of the seminary's trustees.
The statement specifically addressed Patterson's alleged mishandling of two incidents of reported rapes -- one at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2003 by Megan Lively and another reported by a female student at SWBTS in 2015. The former seminary president, forced into a president emeritus position during a special May 22 trustee meeting, has been under fire since late April for statements he has made about domestic abuse and women's physical appearance. Patterson firing met with strong reaction, cancellationsFORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Following Paige Patterson's termination by a 12-member committee of the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary trustees, reactions have ranged from affirmation of the trustees to defense of Patterson.
The seminary has canceled planned on-campus events in conjunction with the June 12-13 Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Dallas, and at least two of Patterson's speaking engagements at ancillary meetings have been canceled. SWBTS: Paige Patterson terminated 'effective immediately'FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Paige Patterson has been terminated "effective immediately," according to a statement released Wednesday evening (May 30) by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.
The decision, according to the statement, was based on "new information confirmed this morning … regarding the handling of an allegation of sexual abuse against a student during Dr. Paige Patterson’s presidency at another institution and resulting issues connected with statements to the Board of Trustees that are inconsistent with SWBTS's biblically informed core values." Trustees: Patterson move aims for 'benefit' of SWBTSFORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- The Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary trustees say their decision to "move in the direction of new leadership" by making Paige Patterson president emeritus effective immediately was intended "for the benefit of the future mission of the seminary." Patterson's new role will come "with compensation" and was approved by a "majority vote."
