Confederate statues removed from Memphis parksMEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- Two controversial Confederate statues were removed from Memphis parks Dec. 20 shortly after the city council approved sale of the public land to a nonprofit organization.
The sudden developments came after the city met roadblocks in its lengthy effort to take down statues of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and President Jefferson Davis. City leaders were seeking to remove the monuments before the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The civil rights leader was slain April 4, 1968, in Memphis. Read More
Gaines: Memphis Confederate monument should be movedMEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- Southern Baptist Convention President Steve Gaines is among about a dozen Southern Baptist signatories of a letter requesting that a Memphis statue of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest be moved from a public park "to a more historically appropriate site."
In all, 169 clergy members representing 95 congregations and other institutions signed a Sept. 13 letter to the Tennessee Historical Commission in support of Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland's request to move the statue. Read More

Gaines is a women's ministry leader and wife to Southern Baptist Convention president Steve Gaines, pastor of Bellevue Baptist Church in Cordova, Tenn., near Memphis, where they minister together. Although she is often busy traveling with her husband, discipling women, and spending time with her 10 -- soon to be 11 -- grandchildren, Gaines is also the founder and president of a literacy program that targets at-risk children.
