SBC seminaries: #MeToo is 'wakeup call for the church'NASHVILLE (BP) -- Southern Baptist Convention seminaries long have sought to train ministers in personal integrity, but amid the #MeToo movement, Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary President Daniel Akin said, they have "heightened the alert."
From Southeastern in North Carolina to Gateway Seminary in Southern California, SBC seminaries are training students and faculty to recognize and deal with abuse, reemphasizing personal sexual morality and offering resources to those struggling with sexual sin.
Southeastern has "raised the flag and heightened the alert," Akin told Baptist Press, "given the cultural trends that we're now encountering, given the technological world in which we live" where moral failings often are widely publicized. Read More

SBC DIGEST: Seminary profs Christian George & David Sills resignNASHVILLE (BP) -- Two Southern Baptist seminary faculty members have resigned their positions, vacating ministries that previously had placed them in the news.
The resignations of Christian George at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and David Sills at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary were reported by the Biblical Recorder, newsjournal of the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, on June 4.
George, curator of Midwestern Seminary's Spurgeon Library and its digitized Spurgeon Archive, had edited two volumes of previously unpublished sermons by Charles Spurgeon in a planned 12-volume series, "The Lost Sermons of C.H. Spurgeon," published by the B&H Academic division of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Read More

TRUSTEES: MBTS adds Köstenberger, renames collegeKANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary's trustees have elected Andreas J. Köstenberger to the fulltime faculty and announced the renaming/rebranding of Midwestern College, to now be known as Spurgeon College.
Based upon a recommendation from their academic committee, trustees elected Köstenberger as research professor of New Testament and biblical theology during their April 9-10 meeting at the Kansas City, Mo., campus. Köstenberger also will serve as director of a forthcoming Center for Biblical Studies at Midwestern that will reflect his longtime scholarly vision of restoring biblical foundations for the family, the church and society.
