    NASHVILLE (BP) -- The Southern Baptist Convention's Committee on Nominations says social media discussion helped reinforce its commitment to propose a diverse slate of nominees for trustee boards and committees when the SBC gathers in Dallas.

    "The committee itself had a repeated discussion" at its March 15-16 meeting in Nashville "that our goal was to make sure that we increase the diversity of the nominees," committee chairman James Freeman told Baptist Press. Despite that goal, the committee's selection process generated 67 Anglo nominees for 69 open positions, according to the SBC Executive Committee's tally. Read More

  • Second global hunger run set for Dallas

    DALLAS (BP) -- Messengers and others attending the 2018 Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting in Dallas will have the opportunity to participate in the second Global Hunger Relief (GHR) Run to help feed the hungry.

    A coalition of Southern Baptist organizations is sponsoring the run June 13, the second day of this year's annual meeting. All registration fees for the event -- which includes a 5K race and a one-mile fun run -- will be used to feed the hungry in the United States and throughout the world. Last year, 200 runners and volunteers took part in the inaugural GHR Run in Phoenix and raised more than $5,000. Read More

  • Evangelists to pick up Billy Graham's 'torch'

    DALLAS (BP) -- Following Billy Graham's death, his fellow Southern Baptist evangelists "are ready to pick up the torch" of evangelistic ministry in the 21st century, said David Stockwell, president of Southern Baptist Evangelists, also known as the Conference of Southern Baptist Evangelists.

    They will discuss how to do that at an evangelists retreat and business meeting June 8-9 in conjunction with the Southern Baptist Convention's annual meeting in Dallas. The retreat's theme is "Go Tell!" based on Mark 5:19.

    In addition to the retreat, cosponsored by the Conference of Texas Baptist Evangelists, Southern Baptist Evangelists will host a Sunday worship celebration service June 10 at First Baptist Church in Grapevine, Texas. A "Southwest Supper Sing-A-Long" June 11 will give pastors an opportunity to connect with evangelists.

  • DOM title change, credentialing tops SBCAL agenda

    DALLAS (BP) -- Recommended changes to the title, roles and credentialing of Southern Baptist directors of missions (DOMs) will be considered at the Southern Baptist Conference of Associational Leaders' (SBCAL) 2018 annual meeting June 10–11 at the Adolphus Hotel in Dallas.

    Based on the findings of an ad hoc study team the SBCAL appointed in 2017, the recommendations will be published in the May 15 issue of the SBCAL newsletter The Encourager before the vote at the June 10th business session, SBCAL Executive Director Ray Gentry told Baptist Press. Read More
