  • SUPER BOWL: Patriots same team, 'new lights for Jesus'

    MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (BP) -- Another Super Bowl. Another year with the New England Patriots playing in it.

    It's no secret that the Patriots over the past two decades have been the most successful franchise in the NFL, if not the single most successful franchise in all of professional sports. Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and others may seem to be omnipresent when it comes to the Super Bowl. This year's appearance is the Patriots' eighth since Brady took over as starting quarterback in 2001.

    But from a spiritual perspective, there's something new to this team. Jack Easterby, who serves as the character coach and chaplain for the Patriots, said new faces on the team this year have brought a new depth and spiritual vitality to the team. Read More

  • Bapt. judge helping people make 'better choices'

    MAYWOOD, Mo. (BP) -- Judge Rachel Bringer-Shepherd is not opposed to including faith-based programs in the options for those appearing in her court on felony probation.

    In fact, she encourages that participation.

    "We have a lot of partnerships with churches and faith-based organizations in the court system of probations," said the 10th Circuit Judge, who is a member of South Union Baptist in Maywood, Mo. "We hope these help the people to be successful in their probation sentences. Part of the law days are bringing felony probations [to programs] while the defendants are waiting on a court hearing."   • Ken Hemphill to be SBC president nominee

    DALLAS (BP) -- Ken Hemphill, an administrator at North Greenville University and a former Southern Baptist Convention seminary president, will be nominated for SBC president, a coalition of Southern Baptists announced today (Feb. 1) via a Baptist state paper.

    "We desire to elect a man who is a Southern Baptist through and through, values our understanding of the Gospel, and, has an established record of affirming the cooperative work of our local churches through the associations, state conventions and national entities," Louisiana Baptist Convention executive director David Hankins said according to the state's Baptist Message newsjournal.     KANSAS CITY, Mo. (BP) -- Jesus came "for more than behavior modification," Jason Allen noted upon the release of his book "Being a Christian" today (Feb. 1).

    "As we apply the Gospel to every area of our lives, the life of Christ pulsates through us," Allen, president of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, said in an interview.
