    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Back in the 1890s, a pair of Sunday School teachers -- D.T. Miles of Hopedale, Ill., and Virginia Hawes of New York City -- both had the same idea.

    School kids were off for the summer.

  • Mohler confronts SBC's 'horrifying #MeToo moment'

    LOUSVILLE, Ky. (BP) -- R. Albert Mohler Jr. has labeled turmoil in the Southern Baptist Convention the SBC's "own horrifying #MeToo moment" and said it stems from "an unorganized conspiracy of silence" about sexual misconduct and abuse.

    "Judgment has now come to the house of the Southern Baptist Convention," Mohler, president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote in a May 23 internet commentary.   • SWBTS interim pres. Bingham 'humbled' to serve

    FORT WORTH, Texas (BP) -- Historical theologian Jeffrey Bingham has accepted the interim presidency of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The position was offered to him May 23 in a 3 a.m. phone call from trustee chairman Kevin Ueckert after trustees named former president Paige Patterson as president emeritus.

    Meanwhile, reaction to trustees' decision about Patterson has come from a range of Southern Baptists, including Southern Baptist Convention President Steve Gaines and both announced candidates for next month's SBC presidential election in Dallas. Read More

  • NOBTS prof: Ramadan beneficial to Christians, retailers

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- Christians in the U.S. can benefit from the hospitality Muslims extend during Ramadan, a Southern Baptist professor told Baptist Press, just as U.S. retailers are increasingly catering to the month-long celebration.

    Party City, Whole Foods and Macy's are offering festive decorations, modest clothing and discounts on ethnic foods this Ramadan, satisfying a Muslim market estimated at between 3.45 million and 5.7 million people. Read More
