Bible Study: May 12, 2019

NASHVILLE (BP) — This weekly Bible study appears in Baptist Press in a partnership with LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. Through its Leadership and Adult Publishing team, LifeWay publishes Sunday School curricula and additional resources for all age groups.

This week’s Bible study is adapted from the Bible Studies For Life curriculum.

Bible Passage: Luke 9:57-62

Discussion Questions:
— When have you found yourself jumping on a band wagon?
— What are some comforts we may be called to give up in order to follow Jesus?
— What are some ways we delay our obedience to Jesus today?

Food for Thought:

Following a sports team can be a fun endeavor, but fans come in two breeds. There are fair weather fans who follow a team only when it’s winning, as opposed to faithful fans who hang in there through thick and thin, the wins and the losses.

Faithful fans support their team in both the ups and the downs. Fair weather fans jump on the band wagon and only follow a team when the team is popular, on a roll, winning games and in the playoffs.

Examples of a faithful baseball fan would be diehard Cubs, Red Socks, Cardinals or Yankees fans. They follow their teams from spring training through the long season, whether or not they make the playoffs, and monitor their teams during the off-season. It’s interesting how the seasons of life can affect what we hold as important, even which team we follow.

Unfortunately, the same comparison can be made about the priority we place on following Jesus. It’s easy to follow Jesus when everything is going great, but what happens when it becomes uncomfortable or other things call for our attention? In Luke 9, Jesus challenged us to consider the cost of following Him. The main point of this lesson is that following Jesus takes priority over all other commitments.
