FIRST-PERSON: How can I reach other millennials?

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. (BP) — Alcohol consumption, drug use, immorality, homosexuality — studies provide heartbreaking statistics on these issues among millennials.

My generation is caught in a downward spiral. But what is the real problem? More importantly, what can I do about it?

The disappointing fact, in my opinion, is that so much focus has been given to statistics. They’re important, but these problems have a root somewhere. In order for them to be truly remedied, we must consider their origin — rejection of Jesus Christ.

Only 32 percent of the world’s population claims to be Christian, according to Pew Research Center. Without Christ, society is doomed to its own devices.

What are we going to do about reaching our generation? This is the problem I and other Christian millennials face. We have to shift our focus from the facts to spiritual action to find a solution.

Outreach is vital. A good place to start is on your campus. Other solutions simply include stepping outside our “comfort zone” in day-to-day life.

Here are some suggestions:

— Join your campus’ Baptist Collegiate Ministries.

— Get involved in a local church’s ministries while you are in college.

— Start a fun and engaging Bible study and invite lost people.

— Step out of your social group and befriend a lost student.

— Volunteer at a pregnancy crisis center.

— Assist with a suicide hotline.

— Offer to tutor a lost student.

— Get the lost of your college campus involved in your projects or clubs.

These ideas are simple, but sometimes in our busy lives, they are so hard to implement.

The answer to reaching the lost souls around us is found in loving like Jesus did. He is the ultimate example. Jesus literally “hung out” with the lost. He invested His time in them. Jesus did ministry through outreach. We can influence our portion of the world in the same way.
