Webcast to examine abortion & health care

WASHINGTON (BP)–Many of the country’s major pro-life leaders will address the threat to unborn children in the health-care reform bills before Congress during a webcast July 23.

The online event, titled “Stop the Abortion Mandate,” will begin at 9 p.m. (EDT) and is expected to last about 70 minutes. Registration for, and access to, the webcast is available at www.stoptheabortionmandate.com.

Pro-life advocates are warning that health-care proposals in both the Senate and House of Representatives would require coverage for abortion in the public insurance plan, as well as the private ones with which it would compete. Congress must explicitly exclude abortion in order to prevent the procedure from being subsidized by the government, they say.

Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, will be one of the participants on the webcast.

“The various government health-care reform bills currently being considered in the Congress could well open the door to the greatest expansion of government-subsidized abortions in our nation’s history,” Land said in a written statement. “Then tens of millions of Americans will be forced to pay through their taxes for that which they find morally reprehensible.

“All pro-life Americans need to speak out and speak out now,” Land said.

Other participants scheduled for the webcast include Congressmen Chris Smith, R.-N.J., and Joe Pitts, R.-Pa.; James Dobson of Focus on the Family; Kristen Day of Democrats for Life of America; Douglas Johnson of the National Right to Life Committee; Tony Perkins of Family Research Council; Wendy Wright of Concerned Women for America; Charmaine Yoest of Americans United for Life; and Melinda Delahoyde of CareNet.

There were more than 10,000 registrants by July 21, according to webcast sponsor 40 Days for Life.
