Wolfe sets forth Spirit-filled life

SAN ANTONIO (BP)–“You don’t ever get to be like Jesus by struggling or striving — you do it by emptying yourself of your sin and letting Him live through you,” said Fred Wolfe, president of Barnabas Ministries in Fairhope, Ala.

In his “Equipped for the Victorious Walk” breakout session during the Southern Baptist Pastors’ Conference June 11, Wolfe challenged Baptists to stop trying to work to be like Christ and simply let Him fill their lives.

“The victorious, Spirit-filled life is Jesus Christ living in us and through us,” Wolfe said. “It’s not us doing our best for God; it’s Christ using us as a vessel of honor.”

Christ’s provision through redemption is the initial element of living a Spirit-filled life, Wolfe noted.

“The greatest miracle is when God reaches down into an unholy world, takes an unholy man or woman, makes us holy through the power of His Son, then puts us back in the world and keeps us holy,” Wolfe said.

The process of staying holy is the great paradox of the victorious walk, Wolfe said. “God says we don’t have life until we die. Only when we take our place in death through Christ can Christ live his life in us.”

The flesh does not die easily, Wolfe said. “[I]t pretty much has to be nailed to the cross every day.” But it has to die, he said, in order for Christ to get the glory inherent in the power of His blood.

“Every blessing comes from who Jesus is and what He did on the cross, and you can’t add anything to it,” Wolfe said. “Every blessing flows from the cross. Everything we have comes to us through the finished work of the Son of God.”
