Children’s resources enhanced WMU reports

SAN ANTONIO (BP)–Redesigned resources for children’s missions education and the launch of a national Children’s Ministry Day were highlighted during the Woman’s Missionary Union report at the Southern Baptist Convention June 12.

“We know that God is at work changing the lives of children through Girls in Action and Children in Action as they learn how to pray for and support missionaries and their work, and become personally involved in missions themselves,” said Wanda S. Lee, executive director-treasurer of national WMU.

“Now, following more than two years of extensive research, WMU will introduce a new curriculum design this fall to better meet the needs of the local church and engage children in missions as they are challenged and encouraged to grow in their understanding of God and His plan for their lives.”

Kaye Miller, national WMU president, described the new curriculum as easy to use, fun and relevant to today’s culture.

Through the curriculum’s family orientation, Miller added that “children, leaders and parents will learn what it means to actively serve others with the compassion of Christ.”

As part of the redesign, WMU also announced the launch of Children’s Ministry Day, a special day to encourage churches across North America to help children minister to others in their own communities. Planned to be an annual event, the first Children’s Ministry Day is set for Feb. 16, 2008.

“It’s a day set aside to get girls and boys out of the church and into their community for a day of concerted mission action,” Miller said. “Children from your church will want to join thousands of other children in getting outside the church walls to help the hungry in your own community.”

“Let us help you get your children involved in missions and in their communities,” Lee told the convention. “Let’s show the world the difference children can make by ministering to others in Christ’s name.”

Lee and Miller also reminded messengers about Blume, the national missions event for teenage girls and collegiate young women slated July 10-13 in Kansas City, Mo.

Formerly known at the National Acteens Convention, Miller said Blume is broader in scope, being for all girls age 12 and up and feature four days of worship, interactive conferences, hands-on missions and ministry projects, a concert by recording artist Bethany Dillon and nightly fun activities.
