Yeats’ nomination to be made by Roberts

GREENSBORO, N.C. (BP)-—Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary President R. Philip Roberts has announced that he will nominate John L. Yeats for another term as recording secretary of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Yeats was first elected as SBC recording secretary in 1997. He is the Louisiana Baptist Convention’s director of communications and former editor of the Baptist Messenger, newsjournal of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma, and the Indiana Baptist newsjournal.

“Three weeks ago, I had the honor of conferring a doctor of ministry degree on Dr. Yeats,” Roberts said. “His dissertation was written on the role and responsibilities of SBC recording secretary. After reading his dissertation, I am convinced John is uniquely qualified to serve Southern Baptists in this office. He possesses the technical skills and the expertise to excellently fulfill the office.

“I have known John for years. He is a personal friend and a friend of Southern Baptists,” Roberts continued. “He is an unquestionable biblical conservative. He has a passion for evangelism. By virtue of the office, John serves as a statesman leader on our SBC Executive Committee.”
The recording secretary is responsible for the recording of the proceedings of the SBC annual meeting and for the final edits on the SBC Book of Reports and the SBC Annual. He also trains the volunteers who assist with collecting the information at the microphones during the convention business sessions. The SBC president and the SBC recording secretary are the two officers the convention who serve on the 84-member SBC Executive Committee.

“I have watched John and his wife Sharon serve Southern Baptists,” Roberts said. “They model godly character in their marriage and their service of the Kingdom.”
